Apple Watch records steps as you move, while Apple Health on iPhone brings together data from permitted sources. A partner step app can use the resulting daily total to support a shared goal—but it should explain what it reads, what leaves the device and how location remains separate.
Where the step total comes from
In Stride Safe, you can choose Apple Health or iPhone Motion as the step source. Apple Health is the natural choice when you wear Apple Watch because Health can reconcile steps from the watch and phone. iPhone Motion uses the phone’s pedometer data and may miss movement when the phone is left behind.
The Apple Health integration requests read-only access to step totals. Stride Safe does not write workouts or step samples. It queries aggregate totals for daily progress and recent history rather than uploading raw HealthKit samples.
Health permission is yours
Apple controls Health permissions at the system level. You decide whether Stride Safe can read Steps and can change that permission later. If access is declined or unavailable, the app shows an unavailable state and offers the iPhone pedometer where supported.
Health access is not location access
Allowing Stride Safe to read steps does not enable location sharing. Pairing, step sharing and location sharing remain separate states.
What a connected partner sees
A mutually connected partner can participate in the shared finish line, see the contribution needed to complete it and maintain the couple walking streak. The current product shares daily step summaries for this purpose, not detailed health samples or a map of where those steps happened.
Stride Safe also supports personal daily and weekly targets. This means you can keep a goal that suits your own routine while contributing to the goal you agreed on together.
Why totals can differ between apps
Step totals can change after devices sync. Different apps may query different date intervals, update on different schedules or use different source rules. Time-zone changes and local midnight boundaries can also affect which day receives a step.
- Confirm the step source selected in Stride Safe.
- Open Apple Health and check that Steps permission is enabled.
- Allow the watch and iPhone time to sync after a walk.
- Check the device date and time zone if the total appears under a different day.
- Remember that carrying only the watch may produce a different iPhone Motion total.
What the Apple Watch companion supports
The Stride Safe watch app presents step progress, the shared finish line, the couple streak and encouragement reactions. It also surfaces current journey privacy state and keeps Pause and Stop controls visible during sharing.
Privacy-reducing actions can queue when the paired iPhone is briefly unavailable. Starting or increasing location sharing is different: the iPhone must be reachable. This prevents a delayed watch message from enabling sharing after circumstances have changed.
What the watch app does not claim
The current implementation does not include a watch complication, widget, Live Activity, emergency service integration or hidden background tracking mode. It is a companion to the iPhone app, not an independent emergency device, and it cannot guarantee a person’s safety.
A privacy-minded setup checklist
- Choose Apple Health if you want the combined total from permitted Apple devices.
- Review the Steps read permission in Health.
- Connect only with a person you trust and both explicitly accept.
- Agree on a realistic shared finish line.
- Treat the total as encouragement, not proof of someone’s routine.
- Choose journey location separately each time it is useful.
